Is Being a Heel Losing Its Edge?

September 12th 2008 16:33
Now I have to be honest. It is very hard to be a heel these days. I see them all the time and there are those that get cheered. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the job of a heel supposed to get the crowds to boo the heel? I could have sworn that was their job and it makes it even harder when people just cheer them. Why do you think certain people turn face like Mr. Kennedy for example? People were cheering him and he was intended to be a heel.

Why the Art of Being a Heel Seems to be Dying

I do believe that guys who should be heels should get booed. For that to work, it would need to go back and think how to get people to hate you. It is too obvious to use something like Racism or Anti-American angles to get them over on that. It is pretty bad that you have to resort to that. Some guys however don't have that problem.

I personally believe that somebody like Eric Bischoff found a way to get you to boo him. He was the boss and I'm sure many would love to do this to their boss and beat them up. It worked in WCW and you never felt sympathy for him at all. If you look at the Attitude Era with Vince McMahon for example, he was the perfect heel for Austin. Plus, they created that image that many works would want to do to their boss and not get fired for it.

I'm also going to be looking to the art of being a face and how I think that could be losing its edge no pun intended. Do I think they are dead? Not at all but they do need some serious repairs. If you're a heel, your job is to get to people to hate you not root for you. Sometimes that can't be controlled but that would make it a face turn by that logic.

Mostly I was talking about WWE because that's what I mainly watch. I know I didn't mention other promotions like TNA but that's another story.

WWE Hall of Fame 2009

September 1st 2008 15:52
Well, as you all ready know Wrestlemania 25 will be in Texas. By that logic, it most likely will be a Texas-based theme. I was thinking about it and it's a real good indication that it will have a good chunk of stars involved. There is talk I think about Stone Cold wrestling one more match. I'm not so sure if it would be wise and the bigger question would be who would get in the ring with him? It's not going to be Hulk Hogan as he has his own problems to deal with like his son and various injuries over the years of being involved in the wrestling business.

2009 WWE Hall of Fame

I think that honestly the reasons are pretty simple for each of them. The biggest one will be probably Stone Cold because I'm guessing he'll be the main star to be inducted and the rest will be supporting as well right or wrong. It is a bit soon and a bit surprising but at the same time it isn't. While I thought he would get inducted, I thought it would be a few more years before consideration. Probably due to his retirement back in 2003 and the fact he hasn't been in the ring in that long probably could explain it. He would have gotten in sooner or later because of the impact he had during the Attitude Era. You would say The Rock as well but he won't get in now because they may want him to be the star of another Hall of Fame. No question he'll get in at some point in time.

The Funks will probably get in and they are at least that I know of the only brothers to have held the NWA World Championship. Now, I never saw much of Dory Funk because I believe he was close to retirement or getting there but Terry I have seen. He was pretty solid for when he was competing though he's famous for his constant retirement speeches only to come out of it some time later. I'm not sure why say you're going to retire but then you don't but that's another story for another time. The last mainstream appearance was at One Night Stand in 2006 and boy he was not in good condition. He was limping and it's probably a good thing he didn't stick around much longer. It would have been hard on his body. He's not exactly young and is even older than Ric Flair.

The Von Erichs will most likely get in as they were the faces of WCCW. The only one that has made it in the WWF would be Kerry but he didn't last long. The only thing that may hinder them is the suicides except for Kevin. That's with the younger Von Erichs honestly. Since they inducted Verne Gagne though he never to my knowledge worked for WWE got inducted, it'd be natural to go for them. Instead of one at a time, just get them all in and then be done with it.

The Freebirds were huge in WCCW and had an impact with the rock music and maybe being tweeners. Some liked them and some didn't. The biggest feud was with the Von Erichs bar none in the WCCW area.

Thoughts on Ric Flair's Departure

August 25th 2008 00:50
As all of you know, Ric Flair has left the WWE and is currently doing tours for independent promotions mainly in the form of signing autographs. I do not see him wrestling in any independent or any company because the way he went out was so great, anything else would come up short. I don't think he will ever find a better opponent to have a better match with than Shawn Michaels for his final encounter.

I know there's the history with him and Sting but I'm afraid that's done and over with and wouldn't have nearly the same impact as it did in the past. Sure, it would be nice and all but it really isn't necessary and in my personal opinion, won't be able to pass up his last match earlier this year.

Ric Flair Retires from the Ring

He also got inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, which was really deserving. One of the reasons I think he didn't get in sooner had to due with him being active quite a bit but that's just my opinion. I could very well be wrong on that but still he deserved to get in. One big moment and this is something that is really rarely talked about is that he is the only wrestler in history to have been the NWA, WCW, and WWF World Champion. How many men can claim that feat? None at all.

Now, he has left the WWE on good terms mind you. I do not see him wrestling anywhere else and the odds of him appearing on TNA are slim to none I would say. There just wouldn't be a role that he would fit best personally. I've seen enough on the flip-flopping on retiring in sports in general and that's the last thing needed. I would hope he doesn't do what Terry Funk had become famous for, retiring multiple times only to come back though I believe now he has finally retired.

My thoughts on Ric Flair Leaving the WWE

It is a shock but I guarantee if WWE calls him to do something, he'll show up even if it is a one-time thing. I just hope it's not wrestle because he's done everything that there is to do.

That should do it. I'll be giving thoughts on WWE and TNA mainly. If you have a request from within these areas, I will be more than happy to try to write it up. Have a nice day.

WWE Smackdown – Hershey, Pennsylvania

The show started off with Jeff Hardy coming down to ringside and pulling up a chair to watch the first match.

MVP vs. Jimmy Wang Yang

Prior to the match MVP grabbed a mic and talked to Hardy a bit. The match wasn’t very good, but in the end MVP got the pinfall.

Winner: MVP

After the match Jeff came into the ring with a mic to confront MVP. It ended with Hardy hitting a Twist of Fate.

To the back where Chavo is pushing Vickie around in her wheelchair when she spots the wedding planner and stares a hole through her.

Back to the ring… The now entirely fan-favorite Mr. Kennedy is introducing himself, with some help from the fans.

Mr. Kennedy vs. U.S. Champion Shelton Benjamin

As can be expected this match was rather good. After a series of reversals by both competitors Kennedy hit the Mic Check and got the non-title victory over Benjamin.

Winner: Mr. Kennedy Kennedy

As Shelton left the ring Eve was there to ask him what went wrong in the ring tonight. He pointed out that he shouldn’t even have been in the ring tonight because he is suffering from an acute case of bronchitis.

To the back again where Chavo is hunting for Edge and asking Ryder and Hawkins if they have seen him.

After the break…

The Brian Kendrick accompanied by Ezekial vs. Stevie Richards

Yes, he is now being called THE Brian Kendrick. Before the match he grabbed a mic to talk. Regardless of what they call him he still has the charisma of a flea, and I don’t mean one of those talented ones that joins the circus. Richards almost got the pin, but it all turned around thanks to a distraction from Zeke.

Winner: The Brian Kendrick

After the match Zeke picked Stevie up into an Overhead Backbreaker.

To the back where Edge arrives in the building.

Back from the break…

The Great Khali vs. Jeff Hardy

Khali dominated most of the match, but then he hit the Whisper in the Wind, followed by he Swanton Bomb. At this point MVP was at ringside, and Jeff’s focus turned to him. Khali would take over again and squeeze Hardy’s head between his hands until the referee called the match.

Winner: The Great Khali

We now got to see a video preview of a superstar who is heading to the WWE. That superstar, the wrestler formerly known as Ron “The Truth” Killings. He is now known as R-Truth so that McMahon could trademark the name.

Back from the break…

Maria makes her Smackdown debut.

Maria vs. Victoria

Victoria controlled most of the match, but in the end Maria prevailed in her debut.

Winner: Maria

To the back again where Edge is talking with the WEDDING PLANNER.

After the break…

The Big Show vs. Domino

Show stood Domino up on edge again and again and just kept knocking him over.

Winner: The Big Show

As Show stood in the ring celebrating out came Umaga. Before anything can happen we cut to the back again where Chavo is explaining to Vickie how he couldn’t find out who Edge’s special guest in The Cutting Edge was going to be.

After the break…

As Edge came down the ramp Jim Ross and Mick Foley speculated on who the guest might be. When Edge got to the ring there was a table, a ladder, and a chair setup. As he went on and on the fans started chanting Undertaker. He then says he found the one person who can help him win the Hell in the Cell match, and that person is his guest, Mick Foley. Foley obliged and got in the ring to be Edge’s guest. Edge then presented a video package to remind Foley of a few things. It led into clips from the now legendary footage of The Undertaker vs. Mankind in Hell in the Cell. He then tries to explain why Foley should help him beat The Undertaker. Foley explains how Edge has ruined his credibility because he has said time and time again how Edge is the greatest superstar in the WWE, but Edge has sucked lately. He went on to say how Edge is the only one that can help Edge. After Foley explains how the old Edge is the one that needs to show up at SummerSlam, Edge attacks him. Foley would get the Mandible Claw hooked on Edge, but only briefly as Edge hit him with a lowblow. Edge then lays Foley out on the table, climbs the ladder, and jumps down with the chair under his arm, putting Foley through the table. The show ended with Edge standing over Foley holding his ribs.

If not for the Mr. Kennedy - Shelton Benjamin match this entire show might have been an entire waste. It truly was the only match worth watching. Although The Cutting Edge segment was decent.

Smackdown – Charlotte, North Carolina

The show started off with a video montage hyping up Edge and Vickie Guerrero’s wedding. We then go immediately to the wedding where Chavo is being asked for the rings. He pretended he didn’t have them for a moment, but then handed them over. I was very surprised that they got it over with so quickly. Unfortunately we still had to sit through their wedding reception. After they brought everyone out Chavo wanted to say something. He read off a cheesy speech which led into talking about Edge’s match against Triple H at the pay-per-view. Next Edge talked very briefly. The wedding party would stay seated at the top of the ramp in full wedding attire as the show got underway.

ECW – Charlotte, North Carolina

The show started off with Tazz in the ring interviewing ECW Champion Mark Henry, and his new manager Tony Atlas. Apparently they had a demonstration for us. Atlas got some props from ringside. Atlas had Henry take the frying pan and bang it against the ring post to show it was real. Atlas then asked for someone who thought they were strong to come out and try to bend the frying pan. A guy from the crowd comes in and barely tries to bend the pan. Henry then folded in both sides of the frying pan. As annoying as this all was, it was still rather impressive. Out came Tommy Dreamer, who said, “that was damn impressive.” Dreamer wanted to give it a try. After a few failed attempts at bending the pan Dream took and hit Henry over the head with the pan, which bent it up rather nicely

Smackdown – Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The show started off with Edge in the ring talking, rambling really. His usual whining and crying about being robbed, and reaffirming his break up with Vickie Guerrero. Vickie would eventually comes out, being pushed in her wheelchair by Ryder & Hawkins. She tells Edge about his match for the night to help him prepare for his title match at The Great American Bash next Sunday against Triple H. The match is a no disqualification match against The Big Show. It seems Vickie wants a bit of revenge on Edge.

ECW – Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The show started with something worse than Vickie Guerrero in the ring to talk, it was John Morrison and The Miz. I was astounded that they started off with jokes about hurricane relief. It was ridiculous to go into that area and joke about things like that. Finlay came out and interrupted. While he distracted them Hornswaggle came out from under the ring and climbed into the ring behind them. When they turned around he sprayed them with a super soaker.

Our Night at the Smackdown / ECW Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma

Well the night started off with a ton of traffic. Not too bright to schedule a show to started at 6:30PM local time when you have to cross through a couple routes that people use to get from downtown to home during rush hour. Once we got there we hit even more traffic trying to get in the door. They only opened like three doors for people to have their ticket scanned and get into the arena. There are 12 doors, open them up and schedule more ticket scanners so people can get in, or open the doors earlier! In this arena there really are no bad seats. I now know the ideal spot for WWE Wrestling at the Tulsa Convention Center is about 8-10 rows directly in front of where we were sitting. The seats however were lined up absolutely perfect across from the entrance ramp, so we got to see EVERYTHING. For those who want a better idea of where they were… directly behind the announce table, but back up off the floor seats about 10 rows in from the wall. I am betting the people near us if we were ten rows closer wouldn’t have been nearly as annoying. The people a row in front of us kept getting up to go for this or that. The girls in the row behind us just went on and on, well the one in the middle did anyway. Trying to explain things to the ones on her left and right. Early on she was naming each wrestler as they showed up in the preshow videos on the Titantron. Problem with that was, she got a few wrong, at one point she identified Bam Neely as JBL. Those that know the two know just how wrong that is. She also despised Maryse apparently, calling her many names I will not repeat here. The one sitting on the aisle directly behind me would have liked a bigger seat, maybe one with a foot rest. I was kicked in the shoulder numerous times by her, a couple of light shoves of my shoulder as she had her foot resting on it was enough for her to get the point after about an hour or so. About half an hour before the show was over there was one other annoying guy one row down and across the walkway from us. He had a few too much beer and stood and stared at someone behind us chanting “You Suck”. It was directed at Edge in the ring talking, but we had all stopped that chant about 5 or more minutes ago. He was attempting to get it started again, but all he was doing was looking like an ass and making it hard for some to hear what Edge was rambling on about in the ring. Enough about the surrounding crowd.
