WWE Smackdown Wrap Up July 11, 2008 Results
July 13th 2008 07:10
Smackdown – Baton Rouge, Louisiana
The show started off with Edge in the ring talking, rambling really. His usual whining and crying about being robbed, and reaffirming his break up with Vickie Guerrero. Vickie would eventually comes out, being pushed in her wheelchair by Ryder & Hawkins. She tells Edge about his match for the night to help him prepare for his title match at The Great American Bash next Sunday against Triple H. The match is a no disqualification match against The Big Show. It seems Vickie wants a bit of revenge on Edge.
After the break…
U.S. Champion Matt Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin (non-title)
This wasn’t a very exciting match, it might have been had it been the first time we had seen it, but it wasn’t. In a surprise twist though, Shelton Benjamin got the three count and won the non-title match.
Winner: Shelton Benjamin
To the back in Vickie’s office where Ryder and Hawkins are talking with her. They assure her that they will always be there for her, and whatever she wants to do to get revenge on Edge is fine with them. All they want is a shot at revenge for themselves, a rematch against Jesse & Festus.
Back from the break…
MVP is now out at the announce table to help with commentary for the next match.
Mr. Kennedy vs. Domino
Kennedy made a comment on how he is more valuable than a certain MVP prior to the match, I mention this because I am sure it will come into play later. Kennedy controlled the majority of the match which was mainly to setup/renew a feud between Kennedy and MVP. Kennedy hit the Night Check and got the pin.
Winner: Mr. Kennedy Kennedy
After the match MVP stood up and he and Kennedy were exchanging words. As Kennedy turned around Umaga hit him with a big kick to the throat, picked him up, and then hit him with the Samoan Spike.
To the back again, this time with Edge, Chavo Guerrero, and Bam Neeley. Chavo says he is going to straighten it out with Vickie, and how he and Edge will always be family. I found it curious that he didn’t say familia, but instead family. As we headed to commercial Chavo said he was heading to Vickie’s office.
Back from the break…
Vickie is talking on the phone, in walks Chavo (and Bam) saying he has to talk to her. He says he can’t believe how Edge called off the wedding, and starts trashing Edge. He continued saying how he and Vickie will always be Guerreros, how they will always be family, again it is curious he said family again and not familia. Vickies tells him to cut the crap, and puts Chavo in a match with Triple H.
Out to the ring, it seems tey don’t want to bother using the Smackdown roster. Earlier we had Matt Hardy of ECW, now we have a tag team match with two teams from ECW.
John Morrison & The Miz vs. Finlay & Hornswaggle
Well at least this time this match isn’t on a $40 pay-per-view. Hornswaggles was much more involved this time around. It ended with Finlay hitting Miz in the head with the shillelagh, followed by a Tadpole Splash from Hornswaggle, and a three count.
Winners: Finlay & Hornswaggle
After the break…
A video package of a photo shoot with Jeff Hardy for the cover of the new WWE Magazine.
WWE Champion Triple H vs. Chavo Guerrero accompanied by Bam Neeley (non-title)
Triple H of course controlled the match early, it took Neeley interfering for Chavo to mount any offense at all. The Game would turned it around quickly again, hit the Pedigree, and get the pinfall.
Winner: Triple H
Back from the break…
Natalya & Maryse vs. Michelle McCool & Cherry
It wasn’t that bad of a match. In the end Natalya worked on Cherry’s legs, eventually slapping on the Sharpshooter. Cherry tapped out almost instantly.
Winners: Natalya & Maryse
After the match Natalya attacked Michelle from behind in the ring, then kicked her out to the floor. She followed her out and hit a snap suplex on the floor right in front of the announce table and the Diva’s Championship belt.
Back from the break…
Jesse & Festus vs. Ryder & Hawkins
This was an odd match. Ryder and Hawkins weren’t faring too well, so they both stepped down to the floor and purposely got counted out.
Winners via countout: Jesse & Festus
Ryder and Hawkins plan then became apparent. The bell rang, Festus went back to being docile, and they moved in. Ryder and Hawkins attacked Jesse, then dumped him out to the floor, and turned to start beating on Festus. Jesse now on the floor just feet from the bell got up and rang the bell. Festus went wild again and took out both Ryder and Hawkins.
Back from the break…
Stevie Richards (yet another ECW roster member) vs. Vladimir Koslov
Koslov now has entrance music! His training must have progressed to the point that they wanted to finally spend the money to make the entrance theme for him. Obviously it hasn’t gotten to the point where they trust him in the ring with top talent yet though. This week he gets Stevie Richards who hasn’t had a TV match for months. The last time I remember seeing him in the ring was right after he returned to ECW and battled with Mike Knox endlessly. In the short time it took me to type all of that, the match is now over. Obviously it wasn’t very exciting.
Winner: Vladimir Koslov
To the back again, this time we get the whole freak show at once. Edge is arguing with Chavo and Bam, and in walks Ryder and Hawkins. Edge settles them down and suggests they all go to the ring with him. As he mentions that the arguing restarts. For once seeing Vickie was a good thing,in she rolled to say that if any of them go out and help Edge she would fire them. She then told Edge that if he tries in any way to not go through with the match that she would fire him. She ended it with telling him to go out and take his beating like a man. . . if he was indeed a man.
After the break…
No Disqualification Match
The Big Show vs. Edge
Vickie actually got wheeled out to the top of the ramp by Ryder and Hawkins so she could watch the beating. The Big Show was manhandling Edge for the most part until Edge hit him with a spear on the floor. After the break… Vickie is now down at ringside watching. Edge is getting a Kendo Stick from under the ring. Show blocked the shot from the kendo stick, and picked Edge up for a slam, but Edge took the tip of the stick and jabbed it into Show’s throat. This only slowed him briefly, Show took over again. Edge hit Show with a shot from the ring barrier, and followed with a shot over his head with the Kendo Stick. Now back in the ring, Edge gets on Show’s back putting on some strange version of a sleeper hold. Show fell to one knee, but then rose back up and hit Edge with a sidewalk slam. Show hit a headbutt, a splash in the corner, and a big shoulder tackle. He then went for the chokeslam, but Edge reversed it and hit a DDT. He pinned him but was thrown across the ring as Show kicked out. Edge then went out after two chairs. As Edge charged at him with one of the chairs Show punched it and sent it into Edge. Edge then hit Show with a low blow, followed by a chair shot over the back. He then placed a chair under Show’s head, and was going to go for his fangled version of the Con-chair-to. Show rached up and grabbed him for a chokeslam. Big Show then set Edge up for his own Con-chair-to. As he raised the chair up over his head Vickie screamed to stop the match as she climbed into the ring to go check on Edge. Vickie helped Edge up to a sitting position. He looked dazed as she was telling him that she loves him. Unfortunately he said he loves her too and asked her if she will marry him. They then had one of those uncomfortable kisses in the middle of the ring.
Well, there were eight matches in this two hour show, sadly they weren’t very good or exciting matches. I really don’t have many comments on the show other than it was not very good at all. The restart of the Edge - Vickie storyline is horrible. The look on Edge’s face at the end looked like “well I will say this until after she helps me cheat Triple H out of the belt, and then break it off for good.” If that isn’t the case it probably means that they will be going through with the storyline that made Kristal quit. The storyline was supposed to end with Vickie catching Edge cheating on her with Kristal. Although now since Kristal felt it was immoral and refused to do it, you have to replace her name with whatever the name of Edge and Vickie’s wedding planner’s name is.
Maybe it is time for McMahon to downsize things, or find better writers. Apparently head writer Michael Hayes might make better decisions when he is drinking. For those that missed it he had to go through rehab, and has been told that if he drinks again, he is fired.
