WWE Smackdown! Wrap Up 6-6-08
June 9th 2008 02:55
Smackdown from The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California
The show started of as it has way too many times, thiw week with Vickie, Ryder, Hawkins, Chavo and Neeley in the ring with champagne. After the crowd quieted down slightly Vickie introduced “the man responsible for banishing the Undertaker from all of the WWE, and new World Heavyweight Champion, Edge.” He came out and planted an awkward kiss on her lips and tells her that she completes him. He then goes on to congratulate himself on winning the title and getting rid of the Undertaker. Then he raises a toast “To the deadman, may he rest in peace.” At this point the lights went out and everyone was anticipating the Undertaker being in the ring when they came back on. Edge planned for the lights to go out as a joke.
Next Vickie spoke again saying how on the June 11th episode of Smackdown! her and Edge would be getting married. Just what we need another wedding, someone must be watching TNA a bit too closely. Maybe Edge will have a “heart attack” at this one, either that or maybe he will end up marrying Chuck Palumbo after a hair bleaching. Anything would be better really.
Out came Batista to congratulate them, no wait, he was just joking, he hates them both and hopes they make each other miserable. He just wants his title shot. Vickie says he will have to earn the shot by winning an eight man tag match tonight, Edge, Ryder, Hawkins, and Chavo vs. him and three partners that Vickie chooses.
Back from the break… The bell rings on the first match 20 minutes into the show.
Belfast Brawl
Finlay vs. Chuck Palumbo
They battled inside the ring, they battled outside the ring, Hornswaggle got involved. This couldn’t have gotten more exciting had it been in Belfast itself, no wait I mean LESS exciting. This match was more extreme than ECW matches though, they used a trash can and a chain. Finlay used the chain that Palumbo brought into the ring to punch him with and got the three count.
Winner: Finlay
After the break…
Out came The Big Show whose eye looked horrible. He was about to talk about his title match against Kane at Night of Champions, but Mark Henry came out to interrupt. After some talking back and forth Show called him down to the ring to fight, Henry walked down, but then turned around and left. Good thing too since he won’t be cleared to wrestle for some time due to the eye injury.
Back from another break…
Handicap Match
Deuce & Domino vs. The Great Khali
Khali controlled the entire match with a claw, a chop, and a couple of Khali Chokebombs. The only time he left his feet in this short match was for the pinfall.
Winner: The Great Khali
To the back with Vickie Guerrero and all the Divas. Vickie compares herself to the Fabulous Moolah, then goes on to announce a new Divas Championship so that Smackdown! has a women’s title too. There would be a Golden Dreams match tonight to determine one competitor in the first ever match for the title.
After another break…
Santino Mirella vs. Cousin Sal accompanied to the ring by Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Jimmy Kimmel
Sal wore a kilt out to the ring, underneath was a unitard with the Jimmy Kimmel Live logo on it. The match started off slow and boring. Then Sal picked Santino up for an airplane spin. This left Santino and Sal both staggering around the ring, he then followed up with a suplex. Santino turned the momentum briefly with a bodyslam. Piper climbed onto the ring apron to distract the ref, while Santino went to bounce off the ropes, Kimmel grabbed his feet. Of course Santino turned to argue with Kimmel. Sal took this chance to roll him up from behind for the three count.
Winner: Cousin Sal
While Sal and Kimmel were in the ring celebrating Santino hit Sal from behind and then turned his focus to Kimmel. Piper came in from behind Santino and hit him with an uppercut which sent him rolling out of the ring with the help of a kick or two from Kimmel.
Back from break…
Sal is in the back being iced down during an interview. Kimmel does all the talking, and mentioned that he has Sal’s next match all line up… and here is his next opponent. In walks The Big Show. Sal is unhappy and puts Kimmel in a headlock, Show pulls him off and carries him away.
Next we see The Miz and John Morrison keeping Hornswaggle’s hat away from him. In walks Finlay to take the hat, Hornswaggle sprayed them with a super-soaker.
Back in Vickie’s office Edge asks Chavo to be the best man at the wedding, and then goes on to talk about how he will be Uncle Edge, and all of Chavo’s new little cousins. Chavo looks rather uncomfortable about the thought of this all.
To the ring for The Golden Dreams Match, to win you must retrieve the giant star that is hanging on a pole in one corner of the ring.
Viktoria vs. Natalya Neidhart vs. Cherry vs. Maryse vs. Leyla vs. Kelly Kelly vs. Michelle McCool
This match was filled with a bunch of sloppy fighting. Most of these Divas need to polish their in ring skills a bit, with a few exceptions. Michelle McCool was heading to the star when Viktoria climbed up and was ready to suplex her, but in came Natalya to make it a Tower suplex. Natalya climbed up and got the star and will compete for the new Diva’s Title.
Time for the next step in Vladimir Koslov’s training, a match with Jimmy Wang Yang. Koslov won with little trouble.
Winner: Vladimir Koslov
An idea hit me at this point. . . Let’s take Koslov, Khali and Awesome Kong and put them in a Triple Threat Match.
After the break…
Out came La Familia for the eight man tag match.
Then came Batista, and finally we get to see his three partners. I guessed two of the three partners correct beforehand by the way. They were; Funaki, Nunzio, and finally the one I got incorrect, Colin Delaney. The match started with Batista dominating Ryder, then he escaped and ran to the corner to tag Chavo, Batista kept control of the match. Then he tagged in Delaney who was faring pretty well until the commercial where Neeley hit him with a clothesline outside the ring. From that point on La Familia took turns beating on him using quick tags. Edge got a shot in on Batista who was on the ring apron and then made Delaney tag Funaki. After he got beaten down for a bit he managed to get the tag to Batista who charged the ring and took control. As he was about to hit the Batista Bomb on Ryder, Edge hit him from behind. All eight competitors would fight in the ring now. Batista hit a couple of spinebusters, and then followed it with the Batista Bomb on Ryder and got the three count.
Winners: Batista, Funaki, Nunzio, and Colin Delaney
I remember seeing better Saturday afternoon wrestling shows. There were six matches, the only one that was actually enjoyable was Cousin Sal pinning Santino. With the CW network not bringing Smackdown! back next season Vince is going to have to do a lot better than this if he wants someone else to show interest in the show.
Why oh why does the show need a Diva’s Title? They had seven Divas in the match, technically two of them were borrowed from ECW, and three of the other five need quite a bit more of in ring work. Why not have all the divas compete for the current Women’s title, while still staying on their own shows? Natalya Neidhart vs. Beth Phoenix seems like it would be a good match. Kelly Kelly has been improving leaps and bounds, give her some legitimate matches.
Quick note about RAW. Apparently the WWE has signed former Intercontinental and European Champion D-Lo Brown to a contract. So he will be returning soon.
Also Scott Hall has been released from a WWE approved rehab and wellness center. Who knows, maybe this time it will work. For his sake I certainly hope so.
Tune in Monday/Tuesday for the Raw and Slammiversary Wrap Ups.
