WWE Smackdown Wrap Up 6-13-08
June 18th 2008 14:07
Smackdown from the campus of Fresno State – Fresno, California
The show started the all too familiar way, with Vickie Guerrero in the ring. This week it was for the official contract signed for the Batista vs. Edge title match at Night of Champions. She introduced Batista, but Edge was nowhere in sight. She went on about how she expected a great match since he was facing the greatest World Champion ever. Edge had already signed the contract, so now Batista just needed to sign. She pointed out that the contract had changed since earlier in the day, it now states that Batista would have to beat The Great Khali in a match later in the show in order to get his title shot. He was upset but rushed into signing it. As he walked away she stopped him to point out that there was another change. If he were to lose the match to Khali, he too like the Undertaker would be banished from the WWE.
After the break…
We see Finlay and Hornswaggle challenging John Morrison and The Miz for the belts last week.
Finlay accompanied by Hornswaggle vs. John Morrison accompanied by The Miz
Finlay took control from the start, but Morrison turned it around by sweeping his leg out from under him sending his head crashing to the mat. They would battle on the floor, Finlay ducked a clothesline from the Miz. Finlay then used Hornswaggle as a weapon and flung him into the Miz’s mid-section. Back in the ring Finlay stayed in control until he was sitting on the top turnbuckle and Morrison spun around with a kick to his head. It was very reminiscent of Samoa Joe’s high kick to the head of an opponent n the ropes. Finlay crashed down to the floor, Morrison went out after him and rolled him back into the ring, and got a short two-count. He then put him in a rear chin lock trying to wear him down. Finlay tried to turn it around but Morrison countered with a neckbreaker. Finlay would mount an offense shortly after, hitting a series of clotheslines, an atomic drop, and then a dropkick, into a near fall. After tossing him from corner to corner he tried another pin. Meanwhile Miz was pulling Hornswaggle out from under the ring. Finlay saw this and got distracted. Morrison rolled him up from behind and got the three-count.
Winner: John Morrison
Back from the break…
Edge’s comments on how he wants Batista to win against Khali for the betterment of the show. Out came C.M. Punk to congratulate him on his pending nuptials to Vickie. He also added that at any time, and any place he could cash in his Money in the Bank, maybe even at his wedding.
Mark Henry vs. Tommy Dreamer
In a surprising turn, Dreamer tried to brawl, while Henry tried to use his power to take control. Wait, that is no surprise at all. Neither was the fact that Henry’s power was the one to win out early on in the match. Henry charged into the corner, but was met with a boot. Dreamer then punched his way out of the corner and hit a clothesline. He then attempted a DDT, that however didn’t work. Henry picked him up and hit a big Powerslam and got the three-count.
Winner: Mark Henry
To Vickie’s office where she is with the wedding planner. Edge comes in to complain about Punk’s comments, but before he got far in walked MVP who needed to talk. He wants to renegotiate his contract. She offered to look at the contract, but she wants a favor. He has to wrestle Punk later in the show.
After the break…
Maryse vs. Cherry
Cherry came right in with a Theis press and started pounding on her. After a bit of fighting Maryse was laying on the mat and kicked Cherry’s legs out from under her, as she went down she banged her head/nose into Maryse’s knee. Maryse hit her with a leg drop, and then started wearing her down with a reverse chin lock. Cherry tried to battle out but was rammed into the corner and then across to the opposite corner. She then tried to hit a Bulldog, but Maryse blocked it and rolled her up for a two-count. Maryse then followed with a kick to the mid-section, but Cherry caught her foot. She then pulled her in folded her arms behind her back, and hit a DDT, followed by a three-count.
Winner: Cherry
After the break…
MVP vs. C.M. Punk
They went back and forth a bit, and was pretty evenly matched to start. Punk would hit him with a spinning heel kick and get a two-count. Then it was back to headlocks and trying to wear each other down. MVP hit a side suplex, then a headbutt to Punk’s ribs. Punk then went to an arm bar, but MVP hit an elbow to the head, and took over again, working on Punk’s shoulder. Punk would battle back and get a series of near falls. He followed with a few kicks and a swinging neck breaker, but then MVP hit a kick as he came off the ropes. Punk charged him in the corner, MVP moved and Punk’s shoulder went into the steel ring post. MVP then rammed his shoulder into the post two more times. Back from the break… MVP is still fully in control and working on the shoulder. He was relentless on Punk’s shoulder, concentrating all of his offense on it. Punk tried battling back with a series of knees, but to no avail. At this point Punk was fighting one handed. Luckily he still had his feet and knees. He hit a hurricanrana and got another two-count. He went to the top rope, but MVP dropkicked the rope sending Punk crashing down onto the turnbuckle. MVP went up to get him but was pushed back down to the mat. Punk came off with a flying elbow drop, but MVP raised his knees and Punk took the full force of the impact on his shoulder. MVP then took off the turnbuckle pad. Referee Charles Robinson saw the pad laying there and went to put it back on. As he did that MVP went and got the Money in the Bank briefcase, but as he turned with it in his hands Punk rushed in with a knee to his face, only this time the case was between the knee and face. The impact caused MVP to drop the case, and Punk caught it in his arms as MVP fell to the mat. The ref turned back around at this moment and called for the bell. He had disqualified Punk for using the case.
Winner via disqualification: MVP
Back from break…
Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neeley is in the ring with a mic to talk about being Edge’s best man. He then introduces his opponent at Night of Champions, United States Champion Matt Hardy who came down to the ring. Then out came his opponent. Chavo stayed out to scout the match.
Matt Hardy vs. Chuck Palumbo
Palumbo overpowered Hardy from the start. Hardy fought back and sat Palumbo on the turnbuckle but was then shoved to the mat. Palumbo leaped off but Hardy moved and he hit nothing but the mat. Hardy took control from this point. He hit a Side Effect, and got a two-count. Then he hit the Twist of Fate and got the three count.
After the break…
To the back for an interview with Vladimir Koslov. He was asked if he was worried about the competition getting harder in the coming weeks. He gave a very well thought out long answer, problem was, it was in Russian. When he was done he said, “Thank you.” In English.
Jesse & Festus vs. Deuce & Domino
I went from joy to utter discontent. I was happy to see Jesse & Festus back on Smackdown again, but then out came D&
Winners: Jesse & Festus
At this point I had an idea. The New Fabulous Freebirds (which I have mentioned before) with Jesse, Festus, and (this part I haven’t mentioned) Jimmy Snuka, Jr. as the third. I was going to point this out at the end of this wrap up, but as I hit pause on the DVR I noticed D&
Back from the break…
Batista vs. The Great Khali
The bell on this match rung to start at one hour and 54 minutes into the show. This is the problem with Khali, his matches have to be short. At the top of the ramp are Vickie and Edge. It didn’t take long for Khali to take over using a big punch and chop. Batista tried battling back with a running shoulder block that had no effect. He tried it again but instead Khali landed a big boot to his face which sent him back through the ropes and out to the floor. Khali stood in the ring with hands raised and waited for Batista to come back in. He got up on the apron and Khali grabbed him and hit him with a headbutt. Khali then went out to throw him back into the ring for a two-count. He hit a bodyslam, then dropped a leg across his chin, and got another near fall. He then back Batista into the corner and hit a series of Kevin Nash like elbows to the head, followed by a few kicks. The ref backed him up, and as he charged back in Batista moved and put him into the corner. He then drove his shoulder into Khali’s mid-section repeatedly. He tried to whip him across to the other corner, but Khali blocked it and threw him into the corner instead. Batista stop himself though and then climbed to the top rope. As he came down trying to hit a clothesline Khali caught him, and hit the Khali Bomb, but he only got a two-count out of it. He then reached down and applied “the devastating nerve hold”. He then shoved Batista off into the ropes and hit a clothesline as he came back. As Khali waited for the Animal to get to his feet he was setting up to hit him with the big chop, Batista blocked it by grabbing his wrist, Khali flung him across the ring using only that wrist. Batista missed a clothesline, then hit a Spear and got the three count.
Winner: Batista
Another week, another not so good Smackdown!. That is actually about all I have to say about the show. Once again I remember seeing better Saturday afternoon shows back in the 80s. The only good things about it were a Jesse & Festus sighting, and a possible breakup of Deuce & Domino, oh and the idea of Miz and Morrison losing their belts to Finlay and Horny so they can fade away into the background.
