John Cena vs. JBL
In the opening match at Judgement Day we see that The Wrestling God has slipped down to the “preliminary opening match”, and he has taken John Cena with him for now. JBL started working on Cena’s shoulders early in the match, and in the process abused his surgically repaired pectoral tendon which kept him out of action for over three months. JBL continued to control the match with pounding and some mat wrestling. Cena tried to turn it around by powering out of a full nelson and then picking JBL up for the FU, but fell to the mat in pain. JBL moved back in to put him into another scissors hold around his waist and back, Cena powered out again picking him up for a spine buster. JBL however wouldn’t give Cena a chance to recover and returned to pounding on him. Just when JBL started getting overconfident Cena turned it around and hit him suddenly with the FU, followed by a quick three count.
Winner: John Cena
As I predicted in my preview it wasn’t a very exciting match and was probably the correct choice for the opening match.
After the match the camera focused on Raw GM, King William Regal in the luxury box, as always, he didn’t look very happy with the result of the match.
Next up: WWE Tag Team Championship Match
Kane and Punk controlled this match from the start with a good mix of speed and power. They also showed they work well as a team using multiple double team moves on the champs. The Miz tried to turn things around on Punk and failed as he got the tag to Kane who took control of the match again. Morrison hit a blind tag and then came in behind Kane to finally turn the momentum of the match. They beat Kane down for a short time before he connected with a big boot to the Miz’s chin and got the tag to Punk. He came in with a flurry of offense, launched himself over the top rope onto the Miz outside the ring, then back over the top rope on to Morrison. Punk tried to hit the GTS (Go To Sleep) a number of times to no avail as the Miz helped block it. Kane took care of the Miz, chokeslamming him outside the ring, while inside the ring the Shaman of Sexy reversed a move on Punk and hit him with his Snapshot finisher and got the three count. Morrison & The Miz retain the belts and head what continues to be a lackluster tag team division.
Winner and still WWE Tag Team Champions – John Morrison & The Miz
As you might be able to tell if you read my preview I am a bit upset that Kane & Punk didn’t get it done. It seems the only way we can get rid of Morrison & Miz is if maybe they are invited to be on The Amazing Race or Survivor. Sadly, I can’t wish for that because I love both of those shows and don’t think I could watch if they were on them.
Third match of the night:
The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels vs. The Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho
This match started off on the mat with reversal after reversal. Michaels put on his backwards looking version of the figure-four leg lock which Jericho got out of quickly by grabbing the bottom rope. They fought back and forth for awhile till Jericho placed Michaels on the top rope only to be pushed to the mat himself. Michaels was ready to hit something from the top rope, Y2J came back at him and was tossed to the mat again. Finally HBK launched himself off the top rope trying to hit the elbow drop. Jericho raised his knees, and Michaels landed on them hard with his elbow and was left writhing on the mat. HBK hit him with the inverted atomic drop, then a flying forearm, nipped up from his back like he always does. He hesitated for a split second and Jericho caught him and turned him over into The Walls of Jericho. It didn’t take long for him to get to the ropes and break the hold. Jericho was trying to hit him with some move while he was on the ring apron and Michaels hit Sweet chin Music out of nowhere. He then threw Jericho back into the ring and attempted a pin, he kicked out on the two count. Michaels climbed to the top rope and hit the flying elbow this time. He then went to the corner to “Tune Up the Band” for Sweet Chin Music. However, Jericho wouldn’t get to his feet so he could hit it. When he moved in to hit SCM Jericho grabbed him and hit him with the Codebreaker. Michaels would reverse a hold and locked Jericho into a crossface, he quickly crawled to the ropes for the break. Jericho went for the Lionsault, Michaels got his knees up, but Y2J stopped shot and grabbed his legs and attempted to turn him into The Walls of Jericho again. Instead The Showstopper rolled him into a pin and got the one, two, three. As Michaels went to leave the ring Jericho extended his hand, and the two hesitantly shook hands in the middle of the ring.
Winner: The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels
All in all it was a fun match to watch. I was surprised by Batista not making an appearence. Although I enjoyed the match, it still would have been better five years ago.
In between matches Mickie James had an interview. JBL interrupted to complain about his earlier loss to Cena.
Triple Threat Match for the WWE Women’s Championship – Beth Phoenix vs. Melina vs. defending Champion Mickie James
This match started with Beth Phoenix holding the ropes open for Melina to leave, instead Melina hit her with a kick and knocked her to the floor. As with all triple threat matches the action was fast paced with one competitor breaking up the other two fighting so they can take control of the match. Mickie went to the top rope, Meline met her there, Beth came up behind and got Melina on her shoulders and dropped her for the Electric Chair. Minutes later Mickie went back up the ropes and Melina again met here and they fought till Phonix came up behind and put Melina over her shoulder for a back breaker. In an impressive show of strength she also managed to stack Mickie James on top of Melina to hold them BOTH in a back breaker at the same time! The action and reversals continued until Melina hit Phenix with a neck breaker, she then rolled out of the ring. Mickie hit Melina with a DDT and got the pin for the three count to retain her title.
Winner and still Women’s Champion, Mickie James
Another good match, but these WWE Divas are a far cry from the action we used to get from Lita and Trish Stratus.
Back in the locker room Batista did make an uneventful appearance to say a few words to Shawn Michaels.
World Heavyweight Title Match – The Undertaker vs. Edge (no defending champion)
The Undertaker took control of the match early, and concentrated on Edge’s shoulder. This might have been that he was setting him up for a new submission hold he planned to use later. They battled back and forth for a bit until Edge sent the Undertaker hip first into the steel steps. Then Edge took over by continuing to work on the Undertaker’s legs, wrapping them around the steel ring post repeatedly. In a sudden move the Undertaker started to put Edge in his chokehold, but was warned by the ref and stopped. Edge went up on the ropes but was racked on the top rope. Then ‘Taker came at him with a fast paced assault, which included his third attempt at “Old School”, this time he hit it flawlessly. As he went for the Tombstone Pile Driver the ref saw Hawkins and Ryder running down to ringside and immediately headed over to stop them. Edge reversed the hold and then headed to the corner to remove the turnbuckle padding and expose the steel turnbuckle. The Undertaker then attempted to go for The Last Ride, which Edge also reversed into a devastating DDT. He then tried to hit the spear but missed and drove himself into the steel ring post. The Undertaker took advantage and picked him up for The Last Ride, but rather than driving him to the mat, he launched him into the corner. He followed with a cover but Edge got his foot on the rope. He then sent Edge to the exposed turnbuckle with his Snake Eyes move. Edge hit him with a spear as he charged toward him, but couldn’t keep the dead man down, as he kicked out at two. The exchanged blows in the middle of the ring until the Undertaker grabbed him by the throat and chokeslammed him down to the mat, followed by another two count. Edge rolled out to the floor and the dead man followed, clotheslining him over the barrier and into the crowd. They fought each other back to the ring as referee Charles Robinson neared ten in his count. The Undertaker rolled in at the count of nine, the bell was rung, and Lillian Garcia began announcing him as the new champ, until Vickie Guererro came rolling out, flanked by Ryder and Hawkins, with microphone in hand. The crowd wouldn’t let her spew her announcement which was surely about to screw the Undertaker. She then announced that it is common knowledge that the title cannot be won via disqualification or count out. She then went on to say that this means that the title was still vacant, and that the Undertaker was NOT champion. This angered the Undertaker who then grabbed Edge from outside the ring and Tombstone Pile Drived him. This prompted Vickie to say, “You SOB.” (She said it, I abbreviated it.) Ryder & Hawkins dragged Edge out of the ring and walked him up the ramp.
Winner: Undertaker via count out. Title – Still Vacant
This match was much better than I was expecting. The Dead Man showed why he is still part of the main events after 15 years. He was screwed once again though. The only brightside of it all is that maybe Vickie will be removed as GM finally. This will hopefully lead to an actual legitimate tournament for the title.
MVP came down to the ring unexpectedly next and wanted a microphone. He started ranting about how it is wrong for the longest reigning Unite States Champion in WWE history being left off the card at Judgement Day. He went on to demand a match right now against someone in the back. Cue Matt Hardy’s music. Matt came out in street clothes to say he had an opponent for MVP.Cue Jeff Hardy’s music now. Time for Jeff to make his return to a pay-per-view for the first time since his return from a short suspension for violating the WWE’s wellness program.
MVP vs. Jeff Hardy
MVP tried to take control early, but it just wasn’t working. Hardy kept fighting back again and again. Jeff sent MVP to the outside then tried to slingshot himself through the rope with a kick, instead MVP caught his feet and then pulled him to the outside making him crash to the floor on his back. MVP took control at this point, and work on Hardy’s arm both inside and outside the ring. He tried to hit Hardy with the Playmaker, but Jeff countered and hit MVP with a clothesline. At this point Hardy took over and eventually went for the Swanton Bomb, but MVP moved out of the way. Soon after Hardy hit MVP with the Whisper in the Wind and got the three count.
Winner: Jeff Hardy
This was a fun unexpected match. It is good to see Jeff back again, and I hope he can stay on track this time. It was unfortunately that he had such a relapse in the midst of a period where he was getting the big title shots for once.
Time to lower the cage for the main event.
WWE Heavywight Championship Title match in a Steel Cage
The Legend Killer Randy Orton vs. The Game Triple H
Orton came down to new entrance music, which I am sure they will explain more about on Raw. His ring entrances ended with Orton standing atop the cage, as did Triple H’s. Right after the bell rang and before the door of the cage was closed Orton dove towards the door, trying to make a quick escape. Triple H blocked him from exiting so early, and they began to pound on one another, both utilizing the cage, and going back and forth. Orton was already bleeding from inside his mouth. He did however gain control of the match about that time, hitting Triple H with move after move, and trying to score a pinfall again and again. After Orton missed a knee drop Triple H started to make his move. He chop blocked Orton’s knew multiple times, then followed it with the figure-four leg lock in true Ric Flair fashion. Orton made it to the ropes, then tried to hit the RKO, but Triple H blocked it and went for the Pedigree, which Orton blocked with a sunset flip. Then Orton headed to the door and had the top half of his body out the door before he was dragged back in. On the way back in Orton grabbed a steel chair and tried to hit Triple H with it, but failed to do so. Now The Game had control of the chair and moved in with it, but Orton struck with a low blow that leveled him. Now Orton had the chair back and got on chair shot in then followed it with a DDT onto the chair, and a pin. The Game kicked out at two. Orton’s focus turned back to the chair, he set it up in a position where it looked like his plan was to RKO him on the open chair. The Game shoved him off into the cage, then applied a drop-toe hold which drove Orton’s head into the chair. A two-count for Triple H followed. Orton would now attempt to climb out of the cage, but The Game climbed up to meet him and they began fighting. Orton fell to the mat, Triple H made it to the top of the cage before Orton made it back up to stop him. This time it was The Game that fell to the mat, leaving Orton with a chance to get up and over the cage this time. Triple H caught him in time to grab his leg and drag him back over. He then attempted a Pedigree from the top rope which Orton blocked by driving him backward into the cage, then throwing him down to the mat again. Orton then had his entire body on the outside of the cage, but Triple H caught him again in a sort of choke hold to drag him back in. They fought some more until Orton was racked awkwardly on the top rope. Orton charged Triple H who caught him for the Double A Spinebuster. He then maneuvered the chair to where he wanted it and attempted the Pedigree onto the chair, Orton reversed it and slammed Triple H’s back onto the chair. He then waited in the corner for a chance to use his field goal like kick. Triple H dodge out of the way of the kick. He then hit Orton with the chair, hit the Pedigree finally and pinned him for the three count. Triple H retains his title.
Winner: Triple H
It was another good match between these two competitors. I am however hoping the next set of title shots go to someone other than Orton and JBL. Maybe give Y2J a shot against The Game.
Final thoughts on Judgement Day:
If not for the ridiculous ending, the match of the night was The Undertaker vs. Edge.
Overall PPV Rating : C . . . It was pretty good, but included too many matches we have seen multiple times before. The Triple Threat Diva match was a plus, they should do more matches like that.
The next PPV was announced…
ECW’s One Night Stand on June 1 (Just two weeks after this one.)
