WWE ECW Wrap Up 6-3-08

C.M. Punk image
When will C.M. Punk use his Money in the Bank contract?

ECW from The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California

The show opened with some guys taking stuff out of GM Armando Estrada’s office. Estrada entered asking what they were doing, they responded, “We’re just doing what the General Manager told us to do.” Enter Teddy Long to inform Estrada, “Not anymore playa. Holla, Holla, Holla.” So it seems Teddy landed on ECW, and not Raw. This begs the question, who will be the new Raw GM?

First match of the night, a Fatal Four-Way with the winner to face Kane later in the show.

C.M. Punk vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. John Morrison vs. Chavo Guerrero

At the start of the match I have to wonder to myself if this will be any good without The Big Show and the Singapore Canes. Morrison and Dreamer locked up with one another as Punk and Chavo did the same. While they were in separate pairs Dreamer get Morrison down, then Punk suplexed Chavo onto Morrison then went for the pin on him. Dreamer broke up the count. This led to the pairings to switch, now Dreamer and Punk were going at it. Things switched up a few more times. Then Dreamer sent Morrison to the outside with a clothesline, climbed out to the ring apron and launched himself at the Tuesday Night Delight. Chavo followed by catapulting himself over the top rope down into them, finally Punk dove through the ropes hitting Chavo then played up to the crowd. Morrison sent Punk back into the ring where he would spring off the ropes and connect with a hard roundhouse kick to the head and go for the pin Dreamer broke up the pin again and tried to hit a Pump Handle Slam on Morrison, but he slipped over his back and tried for a kick. Dreamer grab his leg, picked him up and dropped him down with a Power Bomb and turned him over into a Texas Clover Leaf. Chavo hit Tommy in the head then went for the Three Amigos and headed to the top rope. Morrison went after Chavo on the ropes but before he could do anything Punk jumped up and shoved them both off balance. Morrison was now hanging from the Tree of Woe, while Chavo was also hung up on the ropes toward the outside of the ring. Dreamer would rush in with a dropkick to Morrison’s head. At this point Punk springboarded himself back into the ring off the top rope and hard into Dreamer with a clothesline and go for the pin. Dreamer kicked out but then Chavo hit the frog splash on him. Punk then grabbed Chavo and hit him with the GTS and got the three count.

Winner: C.M. Punk

Prior to celebrating Punk checked on Dreamer who seemed like he may have been hurt from the frog splash. He will now face Kane in a non-title bout later in the show.

Now to the back where Teddy Long is showing Estrada the letter from the Board of Directors naming him the new GM of ECW. He goes on to explain how he can’t be an active superstar on the roster and GM at the same time. (Which is strange since so many have done it before him.) He also points out how Estrada is being paid way too much, Estrada begs him to help him. He helped him by putting him in a match against U.S. Champion Matt Hardy.

Back from the break…

Kofi Kingston is sitting out at the announce table to be guest commentator for the next match.

Shelton Benjamin vs. Matt Sydal

Sydal looked a lot like Alex Shelley from a distance. He weighed 185 and apparently has been wrestling in Japan. He had a string of a few nice moves put together, but Benjamin controlled the entire match. This guy had a good physique, good ability, and a bunch of potential. . . this means we will never see him in the WWE again. As I type that I wonder how Colin Delaney is doing. Benjamin would throw Sydal to the outside and then follow him. He made a stop to have some words with Kingston, then turned back to his opponent. He picked Sydal up for a Power Bomb. . . right into the lap of Kingston. It drove Kofi back hard into the ring barrier. The ref was at an eight count now and hit ten right after Benjamin got back in the ring.

Winner via countout: Shelton Banjamin

Kingston rushed the ring shortly after and tackled Banjamin and then repeatedly pounded on him. On the outside of the ring Shelton was about to be whipped into the steel ring stairs, but reversed it and sent Kingston head and shoulder first into the stairs.

Back from the break…

Matt Hardy vs. Armando Estrada (I miss the Alejandro in his name)

This is the first time since I started writing this blog that Estrada has been in the ring so I will take this time to say, WOW, I am actually impressed by him. I know he has only wrestled Colin Delaney, but his physique and skills are very good. It is a shame he had to wait this long to get in the ring.

Estrada came out with an attempted kick, Hardy caught the foot and dropped him with a clothesline. Hardy blocked the attempts of an offense from Estrada. He hit him with an elbow across the back of the neck from the middle rope, then hit the Twist of Fate and then the three count.

Winner: U.S. Champion Matt Hardy

Out came Teddy Long to say that he was going to give Estrada one more chance to proof he is worth all that money. He now has another match against his opponent. . . Colin Delaney. A nice twist from week’s past where Estrada would come out and be Delaney’s second opponent after he had just lost a match.

Colin Delaney vs. Armando Estrada

Delaney tried for the pin right away, but only got a two count. Estrada then started beating on him and had him setup for a suplex, Delaney reversed it and rolled him up for a pin and the three count!

Winner: Colin Delaney

Hardy came in to celebrate with Delaney.

After the break… In Teddy Long’s office

Estrada is saying that he can’t fire him. Long says sure he can, he just lost two straight matches. Estrada tried to get Teddy to keep him around until the draft so that maybe he could go to Raw or Smackdown!, but instead Teddy had his own idea. Estrada could wrestle on ECW, but as an uncontracted wrestler who would have to earn his contract, just like Colin Delaney. He then said he was about to go watch his first ECW main event as GM, but paused to say that he had one more word of wisdom for Estrada, but then walked away. The camera shifted a bit to the right and there was Ron “Damn” Simmons with that word of advice.

Next up was coverage of the press conference about McMahon’s Million Dollar Mania. Again, make sure you go to WWE.com to register to win some portion of the money.

After the break…

C.M. Punk vs. Kane in non-title match

Kane overpowered Punk from the start, Punk tried to mount an offense but it didn’t work, until he got a kick in followed by a clothesline that sent Kane to the outside. Kane landed on his feet and pulled Punk out there with him, where he would take control again. A big boot would then send Punk to the floor again. After the break, Kane has an abdominal stretch on Punk. Kane had this match firmly under control. He slapped on a leg scissors around Punk’s waste to wear him down a bit more. Punk would break out with a few rapid-fire elbows to Kane’s head and midsection. A toss into the ropes, Punk came off with a Sunset Flip into a two count. They would trade blows with Kane taking the upper hand, followed by a hard clothesline and a two count. Kane went right back to the leg scissors, Punk would fight out again, only to catch a leg across his head. Punk fought back again with some kicks and punches only to be leveled again by a big boot to the head. Punk would then hit Kane in the corner with his running knee lift to the face, followed by another, and a third. He then tried for a bulldog, but Kane caght his balance and hit him with a back suplex, into a two count. Kane would send him into the corner and charge in, only to be met with a boot to the face. Punk then launched himself off the ropes and hit the bulldog this time, and then into a two count. Kane would then hit him with a Sidewalk Slam followed by a clothesline from the top rope and another pin. Punk would kick out at two again. Kane then setup for the chokeslam, when he got his hand around Punk’s throat he countered with a kick to the side of his head. As he charged at Kane, he stepped to the side and shoved Punk over the ropes, Punk held on to the top rope and then setup to springboard himself into the ring again off the top rope for a clothesline. Kane caught him for a chokeslam, but Punk countered again and got Kane up and in position for his GTS. Kane countered this time and finally hit the chokeslam. He then got the one-two-three.

Winner: Kane

Out came John Morrison and The Miz to jump Kane from behind. Kane fought back with a coupele punches, but was then leveled with kicks to his legs. Kane would shove them off and then grab the Miz for a chokeslam, while he was still on his knees. Morrison came in to break it up with a knee to the face. When Kane got up Miz charged at him with a kick, then a knee lift, followed by a neck breaker. They left the ECW Champion laying in the ring.

Well, this week had just four matches(five if you count both Estrada matches), but overall it was a fun show. Was nice to see Delaney get some revenge. The four-way was surprisingly entertaining. That one led to the main event which was a good match right till the end. They somehow managed to make the show much better in the matter of a week. Hard to believe Teddy Long could have that much of an influence in his first week, but he is good, just not sure he is that good. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Tune in later today for the TNA Impact Wrap Up.
