Smackdown Wrap Up
Wells Fargo Arena - in Des Moines, Iowa 5-23-08
The show started off with Vickie Guerrero and Edge coming out to the top of the ramp. She announced that at One Night Stand there would be an extreme title match between Edge and The Undertaker. The match. . . A Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. If the Undertaker loses the match he will be banished from ALL of the WWE.
After the break...
We have the return of Jesse & Festus to action on Friday nights! In an odd match they are teamed with Cherry to face Deuce & Domino along with Maryse.
Jesse, Festus, and Cherry vs. Deuce, Domino, and Maryse
D & D controlled the match from the start, beating on Jesse and keeping him away from his side of the ring. Eventually Festus came in and kicked Deuce in the face, but he fell backward into Cherry, knocking her to the mat. Then Maryse connected with a kick, it looked like Cherry took a knee to the nose. I wouldn't be surprised if it is broken. Maryse got the pinfall.
Winners: Deuce, Domino, and Maryse
To the back where Chavo comes in to explain why he didn't walk down to the ring with Edge and the rest for their match with the Undertaker. Vickie puts him in a one on one match with Taker for later in the show. Edge reassured him that he had back up from La Familia.
Back from break...
Out came MVP to host The V.I.P. Lounge, with his guest Teddy Long. MVP started a rant about how Teddy is jealous of MVP, and how he has held him down the entire time he was in charge. As Teddy was ready to leave Batista's music played, and down he came. He wanted to say goodbye to Teddy, and then warned MVP that if he put his hands on him again that he'd put his fist right down his throat. MVP said he was disrespecting him, Batista showed him how he'd disrespect him, and started tearing the lounge apart. At this point MVP left the ring and headed up the ramp.
After the break...
MVP heads to Vickie's office to complain. He ended up getting a match against Batista later in the show.
Finlay accompanied by Hornswaggle vs. Chuck Palumbo
The match went back and forth a bit. Finlay worked on Palumbo's leg, Palumbo pounded on Finlay. The Hornswaggle sprayed Palumbo with a super soaker, Palumbo gave chase, but Finlay headed him off with a clothesline. Finlay was taking control outside of the ring, but then threw Palumbo back in and was met with a big boot to the head. It seemed everytime Finlay tried to mount an offense Palumbo would pound him down again. Then Finlay finally started to build some momentum. Palumbo then got a hold of Hornswaggle and dragged him into the ring. Horny then spit a green mist into his face. The ref went to get him out of the ring, and Finlay was able to hit him in the head with the shelayle and got the three count.
Winner: Finlay
MVP vs. Batista
This match too was back and forth with Batista having the upper hand for the most part. Then MVP turned things around and hit Batista with his running kick to the face in the corner, it launched the Animal backward over the top rope and crashing to the floor. After the commercial, MVP has Batista back in the ring and he is controlling things. Batista tried to overpower MVP, but seemed dazed after that kick, and MVP turned it back around. He then started working on the Animal's shoulder using both the ropes and the steel ring post to help him. MVP was setting up for another boot but the Animal met him with a spear. Batista started working on MVP's shoulder, which led into him hitting the Batista Bomb one-handed, followed by the pin.
Winner: Batista
Vladimir Koslov vs. Nunzio
Oh, I was so close! It was Nunzio that was Koslov's next step in training. He dominated the entire match, but needs a little more work on timing. Certain spots just didn't look smooth at all.
Winner: Vladimir Koslov
Back from break...
U.S. Champion Matt Hardy & Kofi Kingston vs. Elijah Burke & Shelton Benjamin
Kingston and Burke started off the match with Kingston taking control with some quick offense. Tag to Matt who picks up right where Kofi left off. After a distraction by Benjamin, Burke got the upper hand and turned it all around. They would tag in and out while wearing Hardy down. Matt would turn it around with a Side Effect which let him get the tag to Kingston who charged in with a flurry of offense and high-flying to take over. He then hit Benjamin with a spin kick to Shelton's head. Kingston gets the one, two, three.
Winners: Matt Hardy & Kofi Kingston
After the break...
The Undertaker vs. Chavo Guerrero accompanied by Bam Neeley, Ryder, Hawkins, and Edge
The Undertaker took control at the start of the match and kept it till he charged with a big boot which Chavo moved out of the way from, the Undertaker was racked on the top rope. Then La Familia grabbed him and pulled him to the outside and began their assault while Chavo kept the ref busy. At this point referee Charles Robinson made everyone outside the ring, other than Neeley, go up the ramp to the back. Chavo tried to mount some offense to no avail, Taker just kept fighting back. Neeley distracted the ref while Chavo raked the eyes to escape a chokehold, Undertaker came right back and tried another one, Neeley again got the ref's attention and Chavo hit the Undertaker with a low-blow. While Chavo was climbing up for a frog splash the Undertaker sat up and stood up. Chavo leaped, Taker caught him and shifted him into the Tombstone Pile Driver. The Undertaker then got the three count.
Winner: The Undertaker
Well it was good to see Jesse & Festus back on the show. Now if we can maybe get Festus out of the "Matt Morgan" phase, They maybe be the key to the WWE's struggling tag team division. Personally I would enjoy a "New Freebirds" storyline than the psycho man after bell, slow man before bell.
Batista vs. MVP was a decent match. The rest of the show was somewhat lackluster. To touch on a comment I made in the Impact Wrap Up... tonight's show had 6 matches total, although Koslov's training shouldn't really count. At the very least the spacing of the chat in between the matches was a bit better.
