Smackdown Review 5-16-08
May 17th 2008 10:50
This week's Smackdown started off with Vickie, Edge and "La (Dysfunctional) Familia" coming to the ring to talk about Edge's miraculous win last week in the "Championship Chase to Judgement Day Tournament". Before long Assistan GM Teddy Long came out to save us from Edge's rantings. Apparently he was unreachable all day and late to the show because he got called back to WWE Headquarters in Stanford, Connecticut. They wanted to talk to Long because Vickie hadn't shown up for her meeting with the board to discuss her stripping the belt from The Undertaker two weeks ago. He delivered a message from the board. Either Vickie competes in her first ever wrestling match tonight, or she loses her position as Smackdown GM. She fired Teddy, he stopped her and said that he quits. Then he points out her opponent is The Undertaker.
Chuck Palumbo vs. C.M. Punk
A decent match. The most exciting moment came when Punk did a suicide dive from the ring to the floor and both competitors nearly crashed into Palumbo's motorcycle. Punk finished the match with the G.T.S and pin.
In the next segment M.V.P. came in to confront Vickie, Edge, and Chavo about last week's tournament being "total bull". Second later Finlay joined in, then in walked The Big Show. Vickie doesn't like them questioning her and makes a tag match for later in the show. It will be Finlay and The Big Show vs. M.V.P. and the partner of his choice. More on this later.
Michelle McCool vs. Leyla
Michelle controlled this match from the get go. she worked on Leyla's leg the whole time. Finally she applied a "heel hook" submission move that made Leyla tap.
In the next segment Batista came to the ring to talk about the Shawn Michaels "injury" some more. He hinted that he would show up at this Sunday's pay-per-view.
Now it was time for the tag match Vickie made earlier. Ironically this past Tuesday night while I was watching ECW, I said to myself, "I haven't seen Mark Henry for awhile. Wonder if he is hurt again." The Big Show and Finlay came out, then M.V.P., then we found out his partner was none other than The World's Strongest Man Mark Henry. Show ended up pinning M.V.P. for the victory.
Vickie announced that since she couldn't cancel her match against The Undertaker that she would change it instead. It was now a six on one handicap match. "La Familia" vs. The Undertaker.
Vladimir koslov vs. Funaki
Vladimir Koslov made more strides in furthering his training. He moved up a notch from back to back matches with "jobbers" to a match against Funaki. Of course, this can only mean that Scotty Too Hotty or Dave Taylor will be getting a paycheck on next week's Smackdown. So get ready for The Double-Double E guy vs. The W-O-R-M. Oh yeah, Kozlov pinned Funaki with little trouble.
Cherry vs. Maryse with Deuce & Domino in her corner
Things have come full circle for Deuce & Domino, now they are the ones accompanying the wrestler to the ring. Cherry finished her off with a bulldog and won yet another match while looking shocked that she did. More thoughts on Deuce & Domino later.
Next we go backstage to Matt Hardy talking with Kofi Kingston. After their conversation the camera turns and we see Shelton Benjamin. they go back and forth for a minute or two before heading to the ring for their match.
U.S. Champion Matt Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin, Non-Title Match
This match was filled with mostly mat-wrestling, or Matt-wrestling, whichever way you want to look at it. Hardy hit Benjamin with the Twist of Fate and got the pin.
Next up was the main event handicap match. As the six members of "La Familia" came to the ring Chavo and Bam Neely stopped near the top of the ramp. The other four noticed and looked back when they got to the bottom of the ramp. Chavo and Bam turned and walked backstage. Apparently Chavo was still upset over last weeks Championship Fiasco to Judgement Day Tournament. The Undertaker fought of Edge, Ryder and Hawkins for a bit while Vickie sat in her wheelchair in the corner. The Undertaker finally got a chance to lay his hands on Vickie. He was about to chokeslam her when Edge came back in and speared him. The four of them then proceeded to run/roll up the ramp.
My closing thought:
When will they get rid of the Deuce & Domino thing and let Jimmy Snuka, Jr. go out on his own with no cheesy gimmick? The leather and greased up hair was interesting and slightly fun for the first few months, but it is my opinion they should move onto something else. I also think that if they don't one or both of them might move on to somewhere they can be more of themselves . . . like maybe Tampa, Florida.
