WWE Hall of Famer Howard Finkel

May 10th 2009 07:12
On January 17, 1977, Howard Finkel, a self-professed wrestling fanatic, nervously donned a red tuxedo with a matching ruffled shirt and stepped into the Madison Square Garden ring to introduce a lineup of wrestling stars that included "The World's Strongest Man" Ken Patera.

Though he had worked before as a World Wrestling Federation ring announcer, he considers that night in New York City to be his real debut.

"The Garden is the Garden," Finkel said matter-of-factly. "You haven't made it until you've made it to the Garden."

The performance was a tryout. After the Garden show, he became a regular announcer.

Only a year before, Finkel had been plucked from his job
Advertisement
as a New Haven Coliseum usher by wrestling impresario Vince McMahon Jr. He eventually would become the most recognizable ring announcer for the organization later renamed World Wresting Entertainment.

"Howard Finkel is WWE's Michael Buffer," said Joey Styles, himself a former announcer for the organization. "When any WWE superstar or WWE fan imagines winning the WWE championship, the voice in their head making the official announcement is Howard Finkel."

Like Buffer, Finkel is known for generating suspense through the inflection of certain words. Finkel's trademark is bellowing the phrase, "neeeeww world champion . . ."

"I wanted to make sure that I took these folks on a ride," Finkel said.

Behind the scenes, he served as the "legs" of the WWE promotion and publicity departments. In the early 1980s, he helped Connecticut high schools hold fundraisers so they could host professional wrestling shows.

"It was better than a bake sale and a car wash," Finkel said. "You don't get wet; you don't get fat."

Finkel, known as "The Fink," is considered the WWE's first and longest-serving employee. The media and entertainment juggernaut has been based in Stamford since 1986.

The 58-year-old Norwalk resident has witnessed the expansion of a business that once consisted of a traveling road show with dueling heroes and villains, otherwise known as "babyfaces" and "heels."

WWE's three television programs -- "Monday Night Raw," "Friday Night SmackDown" and "ECW" -- are among the most watched on cable. They are broadcast live from cities worldwide. Like a soap opera, the season never ends.

"We give fans a lot," Finkel said. "Action, adventure, entertainment, athleticism, highs and lows."

As evidence of the show's popularity, Hillary Rodham Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama each taped messages for "Monday Night Raw" during last year's presidential campaign.

In Stamford, WWE has more than 500 employees, in departments that include marketing, publishing, and television and Web production.

A team of 100 young writers and producers create content for the Web site, including video, chat rooms and blogs.

Finkel is part of this technologically driven enterprise. Last year, he became a contributing editor and blogger for the company's Web site at WWE.com. This allows him to express his insights on the week-to-week machinations of the three wrestling shows.

After more than three decades, Finkel still approaches the subject with the same voracious intensity and innocent awe as when he saw his first show at a smoke-filled arena in New Jersey. He can be both analytical and sentimental. Referring to a diminished wrestler, he recently wrote on his blog: "The wick in the candle of opportunity was getting ever so smaller for him."

Because of his longevity and memory -- he made it a point to know the hometowns and weights of every wrestler he introduced -- Finkel also functions as a historian for the organization.

"Howard is my last line of defense," said Mark Keys, WWE's vice president of Web production. "He has the final say on everything."

Last month, Finkel was inducted into the WWE's Hall of Fame for his role as an announcer.

"I wear this with pride," he said of his thickset ruby Hall of Fame ring, his voice filling with emotion. "This is my main event. It's everything that I have worked so hard for."

Recently, co-workers surprised him with a video of career highlights.

Treating the occasion seriously, Finkel pulled himself close to the computer and studied the images. There was footage from his string of appearances at "Wrestlemania" events, the annual pay-per-view show that he coined. Dressed in a tuxedo, he seemed to lend a sense of gravity to the sweaty bouts between spandex-clad wrestlers.

But when Wrestlemania took place at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, he, like everyone else, wore a white toga.

As the film ended, and his colleagues broke into applause, Finkel said with a sly grin, "Now, I want to have a meeting to figure out how to sell this product."

Raw Results

March 10th 2009 04:28
In Jacksonville, Florida, with just a few weeks to go before the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania, Raw was the site of some huge news regarding The Grandest Stage of Them All. In addition to Kofi Kingston earning a spot in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, John Cena also found himself becoming a participant in a Triple Threat Match for the World Heavyweight Championship. But while Raw was in Florida, the most shocking event of the night took place in St. Louis, where Randy Orton watched the program from his home. His viewing experience was interrupted however, when The Legend Killer’s WrestleMania opponent, WWE Champion Triple H, busted into the Orton household and attacked the 2009 Royal Rumble winner.

Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase def. WWE Champion Triple H in a Handicap Match via forfeit; The Game invades Randy Orton's home
As announced earlier in the night, Orton’s “Legacy,” Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase prepared to team up against WWE Champion Triple H in Raw’s main event. But when The Game’s music played, the WWE Champion was nowhere to be seen. Rhodes & DiBiase demanded that they be declared the victors, since their opponent was a no-show. The two multi-generational Superstars received their wish, but their victory was interrupted by Randy Orton, making his voice heard from his home in St. Louis.

The 2009 Royal Rumble winner was furious that Triple H would fail to show up for a match, and worried that he could no-show his WrestleMania title defense, preventing Orton from winning the championship. As he ranted, the doorbell began to ring, with increasing urgency. Eventually, a furious Triple H smashed his way through the door. The Game chased Orton through the house, terrifying his wife and father along the way, before throwing his WrestleMania opponent through a window. As the fight spilled over into the front yard, police officers arrived and took the WWE Champion away in handcuffs.

Rey Mysterio, Finlay & Christian def. Kane & World Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison
A little less than a week after World Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison faced off against Finlay & Christian as part of a Six-Man Tag Team Match on ECW, they met once again on Raw. The Belfast Brawler and Captain Charisma were joined by Rey Mysterio as their opponents teamed up with Kane for another Six-Man Tag Team Match. Although he was at a size disadvantage, the Ultimate Underdog was able to prevail, pinning Morrison for the win.

Chris Jericho challenged Ric Flair to a match on Raw; Koko B. Ware announced as part of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009
After losing a Money in the Bank Qualifying Match as a result of Ric Flair’s involvement, Chris Jericho was irate. The nefarious Superstar challenged the WWE Hall of Famer to come out of retirement and face him in a match the following week on Raw, where he promised to end the “Ric Flair story.”

Following Jericho’s tirade, another member of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009 was announced: Koko B. Ware.

Kofi Kingston def. Chris Jericho in a Money in the Bank Qualifying Match, due to the involvement of Ric Flair
On Raw, Kofi Kingston and Chris Jericho faced off with a spot in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at stake. Both Superstars were eager to do whatever it took to earn the right to perform on The Grandest Stage of Them All, as winning the Money in the Bank Match results in a World Title Match at any time of the challenger’s choosing. During the contest, Hall of Famer Ric Flair made his way out to the entrance ramp and distracted Jericho, taking revenge for the nefarious Superstar’s recent spate of insults and attacks perpetuated on numerous WWE Legends. The "Nature Boy’s" involvement was just the opening Kingston needed, as he pinned Jericho to earn his spot at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.

John Cena was added to the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania World Heavyweight Championship Match; Big Show was revealed to be carrying on an affair with Vickie Guerrero
SmackDown’s World Heavyweight Champion Edge and Big Show appeared on Raw with the General Manager of both shows, Vickie Guerrero for their World Heavyweight Title Match contract signing. Both Superstars put aside their enmity to sign the paperwork, shake hands and agree to make history at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania. But their moment was interrupted by John Cena, who just a few days earlier on SmackDown, had whispered something in Guerrero’s ear, capable of stopping Edge’s wife in her tracks. At the former World Heavyweight Champion’s urging, Vickie announced that the contest would become a Triple Threat Match in order to include Cena.

When both The Rated-R Superstar and The World’s Largest Athlete appeared utterly shocked at the development, Cena offered them an explanation against the General Manager’s wishes. He claimed that he had confessed his love for Vickie Guerrero, prompting her to give him a World Heavyweight Title opportunity as a way of expressing her own amorous feelings toward him. Edge was infuriated by Cena making moves on his wife, and told Vickie to tear up the contract. Cena then revealed the truth: He didn’t have feelings for Vickie, but he knew someone else who did. Showing the footage he presumably used to pressure the General Manager, Cena revealed that Big Show and Vickie had been carrying on a relationship behind her husband’s back.

Divas Champion Maryse def. Women’s Champion Melina (non-title match)
As a result of their altercation on Raw last week, Divas Champion Maryse came to Raw to face off against Women’s Champion Melina. But Maryse wasn’t traveling alone, as she brought a group of SmackDown Divas with her, including Maria, the Bella Twins, Eve and Michelle McCool. In spite of the presence of a group of Raw Divas including Mickie James, Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix, Rosa Mendes, Layla and Jillian, the Divas Champion managed to pin Melina for the win. Following the match, all of the Divas took to the ring, where they squared off before assaulting one another with little regard to their home brand.

After the match, Raw's interim General Manager, Vickie Guerrero, announced that there would be a 25-Diva Battle Royal at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania, featuring Divas from Raw, SmackDown, ECW and WWE History.

Randy Orton was interviewed in his home; WWE Champion Triple H will face Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase in a Handicap Match later in the night
Three nights earlier, Randy Orton and his “Legacy” appeared on SmackDown, where they brutally attacked WWE Champion Triple H. But while Orton’s WrestleMania opponent was scheduled to face Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase in a Handicap Match as Raw’s main event, The Legend Killer rested comfortably in his St. Louis home. In his interview with Michael Cole, Orton claimed that his attack on Triple H showed restraint, despite the fact that it violated his own stipulation banning physical contact between himself and the champion. The viper-like Superstar went on to state his plan to continuously chip away at The Game until they face one another for the WWE Title at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.

JBL def. CM Punk to become the new Intercontinental Champion
As announced prior to the match, JBL had been petitioning Vickie Guerrero in recent weeks for an Intercontinental Title opportunity. On Raw, the show’s interim General Manager finally gave in, and placed the Longhorn Loudmouth in a match against Intercontinental Champion CM Punk. In spite of The Straightedge Superstar’s impressive technical ability, he wasn’t able to compete against the unscrupulous tactics of JBL, who raked Punk’s eyes and hit him with a clothesline to win the title, which could very well play into his promise on his WWE Universe blog to do something “historic” at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.

Undertaker appeared on Raw to confront Shawn Michaels
Raw opened with Shawn Michaels taking to the ring, trumpeting his intention of beating Undertaker at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania, breaking The Phenom’s historic 16-0 winning streak. But “Mr. WrestleMania” was interrupted by a bone-chilling gong, heralding the arrival of Undertaker himself. The Deadman pointed out that while HBK has an impressive history at WrestleMania, he has known defeat at The Biggest Spectacle of Them All, while Undertaker has not. Michaels was unflappable though, again proclaiming that he’ll walk away victorious before leaving the ring.

SmackDown Results

March 8th 2009 08:25
In Uncasville, Connecticut, the tension throughout WWE continued to intensify at Mohegan Sun Arena as the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania looms on the horizon. On SmackDown, seven different Superstars interrupted the action throughout the night, employing treacherous ambushes, calls for justice, attacks of revenge and outright meanness.

WWE Champion Triple H def. Umaga (Non-title) (Disqualification)

Although Randy Orton set the stipulation on Monday Night Raw that Triple H could not touch him without being provoked until their epic encounter at WrestleMania, that didn’t stop “Legacy” from coming after The Game this Friday. After The King of Kings had hurled Umaga over the top rope and onto the floor, Orton, Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes emerged from the crowd, stalking the ring like a pack of wolves. Once they moved in, the 13-time World Champion launched a fierce counter-offensive, trying to hold off Legacy both in and outside the ring. But his dangerous adversaries were unrelenting, finishing their target off with four vicious kicks to the head by Orton, leaving Triple H completely annihilated.

25th Anniversary of WrestleMania World Heavyweight Championship Match Contract Signing

Before SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero could get the contract signing underway, World Heavyweight Champion Edge demanded to know the true definition of her relationship with Big Show. But, after a heated exchange of words between The Rated-R Superstar and The World’s Largest Athlete, it looked like their match would become official. That was until John Cena interrupted the gathering, laying waste to both Superstars. The former World Champion then whispered something into Guerrero’s ear that was not audible to the WWE Universe, but clearly shook the General Manager to her core. Later, a very upset Guerrero informed her husband that she was moving the contract signing to Monday Night Raw, leaving the WWE Universe with more questions than answers.

Montel Vontavious Porter def. Matt Hardy (Money in the Bank Qualifying Match)

Prior to his match, Matt Hardy proclaimed that even though his brother, Jeff, didn’t wish to face him, he would not be able to run from him. He vowed to qualify for the WrestleMania Money in the Bank Ladder Match, destroy the seven other Superstars and finally become a World Champion. But, much to his chagrin, his opponent MVP was instead able to further his new-found winning streak, countering Hardy’s Twist of Fate to score a victory over his long-time foe, solidifying his place at the WrestleMania table. However, Matt Hardy’s night would not end there.

United States Champion Shelton Benjamin def. Jeff Hardy (Disqualification) (Money in the Bank Qualifying Match)

After missing his chance at Money in the Bank, Matt Hardy decided to bring the same fate upon his brother. Once Jeff Hardy had executed the Twist of Fate on The Gold Standard, Matt calmly walked to the ring without a word and delivered a single punch to the reeling United States Champion, causing Jeff’s disqualification. For the second time, Matt Hardy intentionally squashed his brother’s dreams.

Undertaker accepts the challenge of Shawn Michaels

After Shawn Michaels overcame Vladimir Kozlov this past Monday night to win the right to face Undertaker at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania, the legendary Deadman emerged to accept HBK’s challenge. And when a video compilation of Michaels’ WrestleMania history interrupted The Phenom, the Superstar with a 16 – 0 WrestleMania streak made the chilling warning that he was the wrong Superstar to play mind games with.

Divas Champion Maryse def. Eve (Non-title)

Following Maryse’s victory over Eve with the DDT, Women’s Champion Melina - who Maryse had attacked from behind on Monday Night Raw - charged to the ring and unleashed her fury on the Divas Champion. And though Michelle McCool appeared to be staying out of the action, joining Tazz and Jim Ross at the announce table, her neutrality was short-lived. While Melina was busy with Maryse, the former Divas Champion slid her way into the ring, delivering a massive kick to Melina from behind. In the end, Michelle left both war-torn champions down for the count.

ECW Results

March 5th 2009 12:23
In Boston, as the rocky Road to the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania took another unpredictable turn through the Land of the Extreme, one Superstar felt the surprising sting of defeat, the Money in the Bank Ladder Match got a lot stronger, and a haunting predator became the haunted prey.

ECW Champion Jack Swagger, World Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison def. Christian, Tommy Dreamer & Finlay (Six-Man Tag Team Match)
Just one week after Jack Swagger triumphed over Christian in an intense match for the ECW Championship, “The All-American American” once again pinned Captain Charisma in the middle of the ring. After Finlay drove the interfering Miz from the squared-circle amidst a fast-paced array of turnbuckle turmoil by all six Superstars, Christian looked to have Morrison on the ropes. But, when he failed to see the blind tag between the legal Shaman of Sexy and the waiting Swagger, the smiling new face of ECW made him pay for it, hitting his unsuspecting foe with his gutwrench powerbomb for the victory.

Natalya def. Alicia Fox
Although Alicia Fox showed a valiant effort in only her second match on ECW, in the end she could not overcome Natalya, as one of the most technically-sound Divas in WWE made her submit with the dreaded family Sharpshooter. When Tyson Kidd attacked DJ Gabriel after the match, Fox’s dance partner answered back with a European uppercut that sent Kidd packing. Will Kidd choose to tango with Gabriel any further in the weeks to come?

Mark Henry def. Santino Marella (Money in the Bank Qualifying Match)
Despite Santino Marella’s humorous pre-match analysis that compared his own anatomy to that of Henry’s, the World’s Strongest Man was not amused. After playing with the outmatched Marella, Henry quieted his never-at-a-loss-for-words opponent with an absolutely brutal World’s Strongest Slam. The win gives Henry a coveted spot in the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

Kane def. Boogeyman
In a monster match nearly as scary as Kane’s movie See No Evil - which makes its Sci Fi premiere this Saturday at 9/8 CT - the Big Red Machine returned to the Land of the Extreme to battle Boogeyman. As the frightening creature from the Bottomless Pit hurled himself off the top rope, tasting the very worms of victory in his mind’s eye, Kane suddenly caught him by the throat and delivered a massive chokeslam for a simply frightening victory.

The convincing win came just one day after Kane captured a spot in the WrestleMania Money in the Bank Match. And if his display was any indication of what the WWE Universe will witness on The Grandest Stage of Them All, Kane's seven opponents could be in very big trouble.

Former WWE superstar and NAIA national wrestling champion Bobby Lashley will compete in his second pro fight against one of MMA's early ancestors, Ken Shamrock on March 21 in Pensacola, Florida, according to reports.

At 32, Lashley is 13 years younger than the UFC Hall of Famer. But at 45, "The World's Most Dangerous Man" possesses a wealth of experience with an illustrious career competing in Pancrase, PRIDE FC and the UFC.

Shamrock, the founder of the Lion's Den, rebounded from a five-fight losing streak when he submitted Ross Clifton in the first round on Feb. 13 at a Wargods and Ken Shamrock Productions co-promoted event.

With a record of 27-13-2, Shamrock has compiled victories over Masakatsu Funaki, Bas Rutten, Dan Severn and Kimo Leopoldo. Three losses to former UFC poster boy Tito Ortiz gained Shamrock much exposure, but by then his best days were behind him.

Shamrock is no stranger to professional wrestling fans. The Macon, Ga., native has kept up with his MMA training during stints in the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE), Ring of Honor and TNA Wrestling. He became WWF intercontinental champion during his time with the promotion from 1997 to 1999. In May 2002, Shamrock joined the upstart TNA Wrestling organization and became the promotion's NWA heavyweight champion.

A novice in the sport, Lashley has gained media attention following the success enjoyed by UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar when he made the transition from amateur wrestling to MMA.

Lashley took to the sport like Lesnar and could become a considerable force given his size and wrestling background. He has found a new home with the highly regarded American Top Team camp coming off a successful run with World Wrestling Entertainment where he became the promotion's ECW champion.

In his MMA debut for the World Fighting Alliance promotion in December, Lashley beat Joshua Franklin in just 41 seconds when the referee halted the bout due to a cut, giving Lashley his first win — a first-round TKO.

The intriguing heavyweight bout is on a card set to feature two other mixed martial arts bouts in addition to several boxing matchups. In heavyweight action, former IFL heavyweight champion Roy Nelson takes on controversial UFC veteran Jeff Monson. Meanwhile, Seth Petruzelli will compete for the first time since debunking the myth of Kimbo Slice at EliteXC's final event last year when he meets former WEC light heavyweight champion Doug Marshall.

The "March Badness" event will feature Roy Jones Jr in the main event as he takes on Omar Sheika.

Former WCW Superstar, The Stro (The Maestro), who worked for WCW, recently took some time out of his scheduled to give his opinion. He spoke on several topics from how he started his career in WCW, working with Chris Benoit & Sting, politics in WCW, drugs in wrestling, Ric Flair and much more. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On his time in WCW: My time with WCW was one of if not the best of my career. My overseas run along with my time with the USWA was very influential in meeting the higher ups in WCW at the time. Wrestling and working with arguably the best wrestling talent in the world was a real treat and a time in my career I will always cherish and appreciate.

The Stro Wrestler

On a WWE tryout with Chris Benoit: We both tried out for the WWE in the mid-90's. But neither of us were taken in the company at the time. Ironically we both ended up in WCW years later.

On drugs in wrestling: The drug testing today is a lot stricter. Something I have always pride myself on is that I have always trained naturally. Longevity should be the key in anything as well as life.

On working with several stars in WCW: Sting was the first wrestler I faced in WCW in the 90's. Awesome charisma and a great athlete. Jerry Lawler and I have had some great matches in the mid 90's with the USWA. Scott Hall and I had a great tag team match with Sid Vicious and Jerry Lawler during that time as well. Scott Hall was a great guy and wished we could have done more together during my run with WCW. Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan went to bat for me signing a deal with WCW.
